Plot

Over 600 years’ history of Madurai, beginning with the conquest of the ancient city by Malik Kafur, focuses on the unique security system and guards at Madurai Fort. The British, keen on expanding the city, dismantled the security system, suppressed the revolt of the guards, settled them in the Gudalur-Cumbum areas and finally declared them as a criminal tribe. The 1000-odd page novel has hundreds of stories between the covers dealing with the history of these people.

What others say :

Sify : The least you expect from a period film are a few fantastic sequences that will make your jaw drop for their sheer inventiveness and music. But director Vasanthabalan’s third offering Aravan, based on Su. Venkatesan’s novel Kaaval Kottam is so agonisingly snail-paced, you can’t be blamed for nodding off to sleep in your seat.

Indiaglitz : Entertaining and engrossing from the word go. There is some lacunae in second half with too many sub-plots. But what makes it count is that it is indeed a honest attempt. A novice attempt that’s worthy of your time.
